FOUNDATION OF DRAWING, BYZANTINE PAINTING AND THEOLOGY OF THE ICON
The St. George Iconography School seeks to unite individuals in the diaspora, nurture cultural and traditional arts, restore medieval church art, foster a love for Orthodoxy, and express spirituality through icon painting.
In the first year students learn about the materials needed for iconography, the fundamentals of drawing, and develop muscle memory. They practice various line types and study the anatomy of characters and figures, culminating in painting simpler monochrome motifs.
In the second year students focus on the figures of Saints and paint individual motifs integral to icons, such as clothing, architecture, flora, and fauna, using traditional egg tempera while developing their skills in pigment technology.
In the third year students work on the portrait icon on prepared Linden boards and practice calligraphy, gilding and varnishing skils as well as creating large-scale works in preparation for fresco painting.
The fourth year is critical for acquiring the professional title of ICONOGRAPHER.
Students integrate the knowledge and skills acquired in the previous three years and paint the final icon as a graduate work. Students also study the basics of board preparation, and other modern techniques used in contemporary Byzantine iconography.
